3b) The Bright Lights Project:
This project was initiated in order to establish educational workshops
and support groups for our clinic children. The funding from ERSF allowed
us to renovate an existing Wendy house and create a warm and comfortable
classroom/playroom for this purpose. Our counsellors now run two Support
groups a week – One on Monday afternoons for Caregivers, and the
other on Wednesday afternoons for Adolescents. (We plan to start further
support groups for toddlers in the near future). These support groups
have been very well supported and have contributed to our excellent
adherence rates and clinical outcomes. At other times, the room is used
as a playroom / retreat area for children and their caregivers. It is
very well used and loved by everyone during the busy clinic hours
3c) The Bright Lights Feeding Scheme:
This ‘feeding scheme’ was initiated in December 2006 in
order to provide our patients with monthly food parcels. The scheme
is run by volunteers and is supported by a range of donors. It has been
a huge success and we currently provide 300 parcels per month. Each
parcel costs R100 and consists of basic provisions such as mielie meel,
rice, peanut butter, vegetable oil, tinned fish, tinned meat, sugar,
juice, tea, omo washing powder, soap and toothpaste. The food parcels
are hugely appreciated by our patients and make an enormous difference
to their lives. Not only do they help on a financial and nutritional
level, but they have also helped with adherence. The patients like coming
to the clinic, which means their compliance regarding appointments and
medication is better. This in turn means better clinical outcomes for
our HIV-positive children.
A substantial part of the ERSF donation was used for food parcels for
the feeding scheme. It helped establish and grow the scheme which was
very small at that time.
3d) Medicine: Our Clinic receives most of its medicines from the Government
(eg Antiretrovirals, Co-trim prophylaxis, Multivitamins, Basic Antibiotics,
Analgesics etc). This government supply and range of medicines has in
fact improved over the past year. There are however a few medicines
that we are unable to get (eg Aldara, Rehidrate Sachets). We used funding
from ERSF to help us get these medicines which help give comfort and
healing to our patients. If no, please explain why the grant has not
been used/or has not been used for its intended purpose or provide details
of how it has been spent.
Not applicable.
4. In the light of experience, do you still regard the purpose for which
the grant was made as the right priority to be put forward at the time
of the application? Yes
5. Please comment briefly on the value of the grant to your organisation
and how it has affected the work you undertake.
The Grant has allowed us to realize many dreams which have made significant
differences to our patients’ lives. The Bright Lights Project
has enabled us to set up Support Groups for our patients and provide
them with a very necessary Retreat area. The Bright Lights Feeding Scheme
provides food parcels, which have far-reaching effects and the provision
of extra medication gives comfort and healing to patients.
(Please refer to Section 3 for further details)
6. Has the grant enabled you to attract other funds/resources either
for this work
or for other aspects of the organisation? Please give details.
Yes, in particular the Bright lights Feeding Scheme. The ERSF Grant
helped us establish and grow the feeding scheme. We now supply over
300 food parcels to our patients every month. The scheme is run by volunteers
and is supported by a range of donors. It has been a huge success.
With thanks to the ERSF Grant, the Bright Lights Education project has
been completed.
7. Please briefly give further information about the long-term funding
of the work supported by the Erach and Roshan Sadri Foundation, if not
already covered.
Please add any other relevant information or comments.
(As above)
8. Do you have any comments on the service of the Erach and Roshan Sadri
Foundation. Please make suggestions that you think may make us more
effective.
We have been very privileged to receive the Grant from the ERSF Foundation.
We have appreciated it hugely and are very sincerely grateful.
