THE charity commission recently reviewed the operation of the Erach & Roshan Sadri Foundation and a full copy of the report can be found under Policies & Reports. A brief summary of their findings are given below:

The charity was less than a year old at the time of the Review Visit. However, the trustees and the charity’s Administrator have already put in place a good range of governance mechanisms which are likely to ensure that the charity will demonstrate many of the characteristics of an effective charity. Evidence of this includes:

· The charity’s funding agreement with recipients includes a requirement to report on how the grant has been used and its effectiveness.

· The charity has in place stringent financial controls to prevent any mistakes or impropriety. These include the necessity of having two trustee signatures for any cheques, the production of monthly management accounts and a trustees’ expenses form.

· The trustees have obviously put a lot of thought into designing the charity’s application process and grant criteria.

· The charity operates a transparent application process. Its grant application form is on its website, with a guide to applicants about the type of information that is expected of them, along with the criteria applied by the trustees.

· Visits are often undertaken to organisations which have applied for grants.

· The trustees have a clear idea of the scope of the charity’s objects, and have defined the meaning of certain words which appear in the objects, which might otherwise have an ambiguous meaning (such as ‘welfare’).

· The charity has developed a policy relating to the management of conflicts of interest, and included in this is the identification of any conflicts of interest in relation to applications for funding.

· The charity undertakes eligibility checks on its trustees.

· New trustees are provided with a full induction to help them understand their responsibilities and the charity.

The Charity has also implemented all the recommendations made by the commission and these are also included under the policy section .
